Welcome to Project Socrates
We are a distance learning solutions company at the intersection of education, technology, and entertainment, dedicated to solving the current crisis in critical thinking that America faces today.
I cannot teach anybody anything.
I can only make them think.
-Socrates
The pandemic’s disruption of classroom learning revealed the looming chinks in the armor of America’s education system today: children lack training and tools for problem solving, critical thinking, and autonomous decision making. The longer term ramifications of these learning deficits impact not only this generation of students today, but the entirety of our nation tomorrow.
Who We Are
Project Socrates streamlines and simplifies the learning process so that students feel empowered rather than overwhelmed. In the spirit of Socrates, we believe that students contain infinite potential to learn and that this learning is best achieved through question-based development of resiliency and thought: key tools for self-reliance and positive contribution to society. We also believe that the core goal of formalized education should be to cultivate clear and independent thinking; we help them unlock that potential by supplying young people with the educational tools to become self-sufficient, self-motivated learners.
Our Mission
All students, regardless of race, religion, orientation, and socioeconomic background should be trained to think critically, analytically, and collaboratively. Exposure to the processes of ideation and argumentation should not be deferred and delayed until higher education. Instead, the opportunity to develop thought must be made available as a basic modality and universal educational right in both the physical and virtual classroom immediately.
How Do We Do It?
We develop the capacity of the young to think through Socratic Tutoring, made available via three different services —
Socrates Please!, SuperTutors, and SocraTV.
What is Socratic Tutoring?
Socratic Tutoring is a question-based model of education made famous by the Oxford tutorial system. Based on the teachings of Socrates, who would famously reply to questions with questions, the Socratic model encourages:
The pandemic revealed the startling challenges to autonomous and self-directed education. One innovative and popular education method is forming “microschools,” but many parents lack the resources necessary to create one of their own. In our mission to provide engaging education to everyone during COVID-19 and beyond, we created MakeAMicroschool.org, a free public resource to connect families and educators with those in their communities searching to form microschools.
If you or someone you know is looking for microschooling resources, please visit us at MakeAMicroschool.org or fill out our “Make A Microschool” surveys below so we can connect you with others who may be of use to you.
